From Unconventional Beginnings to Strong Foundations
Growing up in a traditional Chinese family, Desmond’s work ethic was established at an early age. Watching the family optical business grow from a shop to a chain of companies, he learnt from his experience there, that attracting employees with right work ethics and mindset sets the foundation for growing the company further. A graduate in Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore, Desmond started working life as a flight attendant, after accompanying a friend to an interview with a major airline.
Whilst holding his full-time position with the airline, Desmond also worked as a part-time insurance agent. Over time, he realised that his energetic disposition was a better fit with the insurance industry. He left his position with the airline and fully committed himself to the insurance business.

Tumultuous Cycle of the Work Ethic
Motivated by his four-year stint in insurance and buoyed by his newfound industry knowledge, Desmond secured a managerial post at a multinational insurance company. With three advisers reporting to him, his learning curve transitioned from part-timer to steep middle-management responsibilities. Frustrated that the team he coached and counselled were unable to perform according to his expectations, he left after a year.
In his search to expand his skills set, he joined an agency that used a marketing platform to generate prospective client leads and eventually cultivate relationships with them. Desmond has not looked back ever since. He became proficient in establishing, building and maintaining trust and rapport with clients, and recommending relevant products for their specific financial and life needs, all of which expanded his knowledge and further increased his interest in the financial industry.
After over a year of comfortable achievements with the telemarketing venture, Desmond and his partner got their break setting up their first agency with an insurance broker. The business lasted until 2012.

By this time, Desmond and his partner were searching for an advisory firm to join. He had extensive discussions with IPP and was impressed with their strong organisational values and efficient set-up. Soon after, Inspire Advisory Group was established to join the IPP family of advisory group partners.
Against the backdrop of IPP’s long history and guidance, Inspire’s transformation took shape. As Managing Partner, Desmond innovated critical aspects of the business such as prospect planning, developed a strategic and methodical approach to grow a varied pool of clients and delivered a suite of services and financial products and conducted comparative analyses to provide clients with greater assurance.
With the understanding that every adviser’s approach is unique to his or her personality and strengths, Desmond found his client niche in affluent, single professionals and ambitious self-starters. He values perseverance and the ability to overcome and manage adversity and rejections; qualities that are sought after in the financial advisory sector.
Desmond’s fortitude and work ethic have earned him some remarkable badges such as his place at the Million Dollar Round Table (MORT), which he has been awarded four times. His next milestone is to be one of the industry’s top l % of advisers by achieving the coveted Court of Table (COT).
