Finding Purpose
through Advisory

People often ask me why I decided to become an adviser at IPPFA at the age of 46 when I already had a stable job as well as a family to support. I always tell them advisory is where I have finally found the “WHY” in life which I have always been looking for.

Before I joined IPPFA 6 months ago, I spent most of my career chasing after money because I wanted that house, car, lifestyle and more for my family. At 43, I had to leave my job as a Country Manager due to company restructuring, and later, another job because of my deteriorating health. I re-joined the workforce after recuperating for a few months, still on the search for my “WHY”.

The turning point came when I met my IPPFA adviser, Yew Chai, for my financial review in 2018. That was when I found my “WHY”. I refer to a quote by writer and philosopher Elbert Hubbard: “We work to become, not to acquire”. I believe that when you are useful and you focus on being useful, you become a better person.

At 45, Clarence Ng seemed to have it all – stable job, a promising career and a great family. But he was still unclear of his “WHY” in his life until he found his calling in financial advisory. He shares what gave him the confidence to plunge in to explore a whole new world.

“… analysing client finances, pursuing ongoing professional trainings and producing better results for clients.”

Here are my top reasons for joining IPPFA as an adviser:

1. I like how IPPFA empowers clients with a wide range of products to choose from.

I believe that choice is crucial in financial planning. IPPFA has a powerful platform that offers clients a wide range of product solutions from well-respected insurers and fund managers to help clients meet their life goals. IPPFA’s team of experts also gives clients professional advice from wealth protection, wealth accumulation, wealth management to wealth distribution, allowing advisers to dedicate more time to developing relationships with clients, analysing client finances, pursuing ongoing professional trainings and producing better results for clients.

2. I get to enjoy the best of work and life.

I love having a successful profession as well as time to do the things that make me happy. A father of two, I lead a full life outside of the office. Spending more quality time with my family is my priority. I also have more time to pursue my interest in reading, learning about life, becoming a better person and being more learned than yesterday. I have grown personally and have become more comfortable with expressing how important loved ones are to me. I also get to engage in sports, specifically badminton, something I have liked since young.

These days, I play weekly games at my alumni club!

3. Helping people with financial planning is something close to my heart.

I fully understand the emotional struggle of losing loved ones and learning to pick oneself up again. Witnessing the financial woes and uncertainties that my sisters and nephews went through due to the unexpected passing of my two brothers-in-law when they were only in their forties, I realised the importance of financial planning. My interest in financial planning was piqued even more after I met Yew Chai. From him, I learnt and understood that with proper financial planning, risks can be mitigated, thereby freeing oneself and the family from unnecessary burden. Having learnt how to take care of my family financially, I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and guiding others to do the same.

4. I like how IPPFA is driven more by providing value to clients and less on dollars.

I believe that successful advisers help people, are compensated fairly and don’t drain clients of their hard-earned money. Despite having job offers that offered me higher remuneration, I decided to join IPPFA instead. Why? I believe it is truly client-centric, offering clients holistic solutions that are among the best in the market.

5. This career is aligned with my belief in helping people enhance their financial well-being.

Planning for the future is so important, for individuals, businesses, families and more. I like to say that by taking care of tomorrow today, the future will take care of itself. So, I want to help my clients understand their financial circumstances and establish a firm financial foundation. I also want to empower them to utilise what they have to achieve their life goals.
